JUNGLE: Concept

The concept behind my Jungle project started very differently to how it evolved. In the beginning my concept started with the idea of a chaotic jungle in an urban setting, based on the bands urban roots in London. Partly into the project I realised that this was wrong for the band, their music can't be described as chaotic. It is calm and soulful.
My original plan for the project, was to have it based around a building, it was going to be completely dilapidated, and covered in vines, with silhouettes in the windows. Though i really liked this idea, I changed it due to how it doesn't fit the band, It felt like it was representing an end, though Jungle is a recent band and i wanted the cover to feel like a new beginning.
The idea I want to go forward with, is to have the main duo of Jungle stood, completely wrapped in vines, obscuring their identities, due to the members not wanting to become vain in the eyes of the media. I want it to look like some kind of metamorphosis, emerging in the bands new beginnings. I want the poster to look like some kind of discovery, though I still want it to reflect the urban setting, so I intend to give the feel of the jungle, whilst still having an urban backdrop.
For my product, the idea is to make a small box, that the album would come in, I want it to remind people of the box from the film Jumanji, as this always gave me a feeling of mystery, which I am trying to create about the band, with the hidden identities and sense of discovery.

JUNGLE: Artist Research

Artist Research

Looking at Henri Rousseau has definitely helped me see what makes an image look and feel like a jungle. All of the trees and plants are very tightly packed together with not much room between them. This gives a sense of overgrowth and wildness. Many jungle plants in these images are long with lots of long thin leaves, I think this really does establish the setting, as does the sense of depth and layering, it makes it feel vast and expansive.

Micha Lindberg

Micha Lindberg is an artists that works frequently with Nobrow, her work is quite chaotic, which is contradictory to how i want to go forth with this project, but her work is still on the theme of the jungle and personally i find it beautiful, the bright vibrant colours, contrasting with the dark backdrop.

Llew Mejia

Llew Mejia creates repeat patterns that i think really capture the jungle, the lack of a base or floor really makes it feel expansive. The colours are beautiful, and remind me of classic sci fi posters.

Storm Thorgerson

Storm Thorgerson is probably the most iconic album cover designers, and one of my personal favourite artists, his work is all one shot photographs, meaning they aren't manipulated other than colour, he spent many hours setting up his photographs, and i think they have such beauty and impact, the top two, are two of my favourite album covers.

JUNGLE: Research and Association

I chose Jungle's debut album over the other albums on the list, because I had an interest in their music, I felt that if I didn't like the music I wouldn't be able to get a good feel for it, and i would end up with an outcome that I am not pleased with.

JUNGLE

Jungle is a soul music collective founded in London at the beginning of 2013, by Josh Lloyd-Watson (pictured right) and Tom McFarland (pictured left). Their music is intermixed with "tropical percussion, wildlife noises, falsetto yelps, psychedelic washes and badoinking bass".
I've found various interviews with JUNGLE that help to understand the reasoning behind their music, most of the sounds, and the reasoning as to why they try to stay away from self indulgence.

I chose JUNGLE as I personally really enjoy the music, and feel that I can take the concept in a completely different direction than their existing album cover (pictured below). I think that this is a very simple album cover that lends itself to be redesigned, even though it is fitting of the bands views on self-indulgence I think that it doesn't really portray the band. It already establishes a good looking band logo which I would take over to the new designs. I dislike the gold trim on the album, and I feel that the background could be far more interesting and captivating whilst still being more about the art form itself than the people behind the music.

Name Association

Starting from the name I looked at Photography in books, of jungle's. I found two books in the library about Rainforest's, the first one called "Rainforest Ancient Realm of the Pacific Northwest" with photography by Graham Osborne, the second called "Rainforest a photographic journey" with photography by Thomas Marent.

Through looking at these two books I think that I got a good feeling of what makes somewhere feel like a jungle, and I will have a starting place for my experimentation and development.
